I was a bird. With the pirates, in fact. It wasn't a happy life, but I loved flying.

Couldn’t you have left them?

I thought it was where I belonged. It was...complicated.

No, I understand that. Belonging… has a powerful allure.

I was a little bird with very sharp talons. Dangerous enough to be told that the gentler creatures would never accept me, and small enough for a big wharf rat to bully, especially since they'd had us from the egg.

And I didn't want to be alone.
